The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office does its best to stay involved and make visits in the community despite COVID-19 restrictions.

On May 6, the Sheriff’s Office delivered homemade cards made by students at Suffolk Christian Academy. These hand-drawn and decorated cards were passed off to the Autumn Care staff to hand out safely.

“We just wanted to bless them and tell them Happy Mother’s Day,” said Sheriff E.C. Harris.

Since Autumn Care remains closed to visitors due to the ongoing pandemic, the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office took time to walk the building’s perimeter to say hello to the residents through their windows. The residents’ faces lit up at the sight of a familiar face waving through their window.

“We’re saying hi to some friends we know from bingo,” said Katie Jones, the community engagement coordinator for Suffolk Sheriff’s Office. “They are tickled to be able to see someone different.”

Before the pandemic, the Sheriff’s Office would regularly make visits to play bingo or other activities for the Autumn Care residents. Both parties have missed this time apart due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We hold the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office dear to our hearts,” said Tameika Cross, the activities director at Autumn Care. “They are a part of the Autumn Care family, and we are so blessed to have them. Our residents always look forward to seeing them. They never miss a holiday.”

During the pandemic, the Sheriff’s Office has continued to reach out to the residents. The Easter Bunny and Santa Claus have made window visits, pizza was provided for veterans on Veteran’s Day, and they gave out cards for Valentine’s Day.

“Just want to say thank you,” said Shenita Cowans, a CNA at Autumn Care. “It’s great for the residents and always puts a smile on their faces. They’re to keep us safe, so it’s good to see them around.”
