Local residents earn award from WGU

The following local residents have earned an Award of Excellence at Western Governors University. The award is given to students who perform at a superior level in their coursework.

• Mary Stiles of Suffolk, has earned an Award of Excellence at Western Governors University Teachers College.
• Charlie Wiseman of Suffolk, has earned an Award of Excellence at Western Governors University College of Business.

Bridgewater College’s Alumni Association awards scholarships

The Bridgewater College Alumni Association recently recognized a number of students in the campus community with Alumni Legacy Scholarships, the Citizenship Award and the Dr. Jacob S. Huffman Outstanding Student Leadership Award.

Alumni Legacy Scholarships are presented to rising juniors or seniors whose parent(s) graduated from Bridgewater College.

Among the students receiving Alumni Legacy Scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year is Meghan Bailey, a sophomore health and exercise science major, daughter of Curtis and Kelly Bailey, of Suffolk.

 

Locals initiated into Phi Kappa Phi

Several local students were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.

Audrey Gboney-Leon, of Suffolk, was initiated at Oklahoma State University.

Usavadee Thompson, of Suffolk, was initiated at Framingham State University.

They are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 325 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Its mission is “To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”

 

Walker graduates

Shawn E. Walker Jr., of Suffolk, graduated with a degree from Tallahassee Community College during the April 30 commencement exercises.

Walker Jr. was among more than 3,000 students who received degrees.

 

Northcentral University announces scholarship winners

Christina Parker, of Suffolk, has been awarded the Achieving Your Dreams Scholarship at Northcentral University. This award supports Ms. Parker’s pursuit of a doctorate degree in technology innovation management.

Parker holds a bachelor’s degree from Old Dominion University, a master’s of management from Cambridge College, and a Master of Business Administration from University of Massachusetts — Lowell.

“This scholarship is truly a blessing,” Parker said. “It will help me achieve my long-term goals: reestablishing my IT consulting firm and furthering academic research within the field of information systems.”

 

Suffolk woman awarded in vocal competition

As they say in the theater business, “The show must go on,” and that was certainly true of the 16th annual Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition. The event, which is typically held at the Singletary Center for the Arts in Lexington, Ken., was conducted virtually for the first time this year.

Talented vocalists vied for more than $700,000 in scholarships and prizes and an opportunity to attend the University of Kentucky and join the UK Opera Theatre to pursue their musical dreams. During the virtual event, the international audience was treated to performances by 24 hopeful young vocalists representing 15 states and three countries.

Holly Romanelli, of Suffolk, won the KPMG Third-Place Undergraduate Award.
