Dr. Christopher Hogan, 52, passed away unexpectedly August 14, 2021. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chris grew up in Byram Township, New Jersey, where he graduated from Lenape Valley Regional High School. Chris then attended the University of Virginia, where he became a triple Hoo, completing his undergraduate studies in 1990, medical school in 1994, and six-year residency in orthopedic surgery in 2000. In 2003, Chris then went on to Duke University where he completed his Hand Fellowship. In 2000, Chris began his career as a naval officer and resident surgeon at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. He was on staff as a hand surgeon for 21 years, taught as clinical faculty of EVMS, directed the microsurgery course, and was an active teacher of hundreds of residents. Outside of work, he took great joy in being a coach for several years for Churchland Soccer and Portsmouth Golden Ball Soccer, an assistant coach of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy varsity soccer, and a basketball coach at the Portsmouth YMCA. He was also a talented musician, beginning his trumpet career at 4 years old, playing for his high school marching band, playing in UVA’s infamous pep band, as well as leading several jazz groups, church groups, and his favorite, playing with his children for Christmas service.

It is difficult to put into words just how greatly Chris will be missed. Chris will be remembered by family and friends for his devotion to teaching anyone at any time, his love for everyone, big and small, and for truly being Superman. The family asks that friends email stories and memories of Chris to hoganfamilymemories1@gmail.com.
