Alzheimer’s is one of those diseases that isn’t always at the top of the public consciousness, until it affects you or someone you know. And those who have been in that position before will tell you that it is one of the absolute worst diseases that can happen to someone.

The Western Tidewater Walk to End Alzheimer’s is coming up on Oct. 2 at YMCA Camp Arrowhead, and you can get involved in the event.

Alzheimer’s disease is a big deal in Virginia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 160,000 people living with the disease and 349,000 caregivers in Virginia alone.

The walk is an annual fundraiser to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The day also serves as an outlet to bring awareness to the disease while supporting those impacted.  This walk is a way for the community and those affected to raise money for a cure while creating camaraderie. The goal for this year’s event is to raise $72,000.

As Karla Kelly explained to reporter Rachel Austin recently, “Everyone is or will be affected one way or another whether it be friends, family or themselves. That’s why we need to find a cure soon.”

Kelly and her family have been heavily affected by Alzheimer’s. She lost her mother to the disease and now is watching her mother-in-law fight the same fight.

The first time she attended a walk in Newport News, she found the camaraderie of people with a shared experience able to swap stories, share tips and find support. In addition to the fund-raising aspect of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, that’s why this event is so important. Family members and caretakers of those with Alzheimer’s need support, and they can find it at this event.
