“Sonny,” as he was known to his family and friends, was born March 20, 1940, in Norfolk, to the late Marie Brown and Ivory Smallwood.

He and Barbara Jean Reid met when they were young and grew to love one another as they matured, eventually marrying and having four children from this union.

Sonny was a longtime employee of Sasha Bruce Youth Social Services in Washington, D.C., working as a case manager and counselor. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan, he loved to golf, he thought he was funny …. which he was, sometimes, but he loved his family!

He leaves to cherish his memories his children: Anthony (Felicia), Tyrone (Sheila), Langhorne Jr., Olivia, Lang (Erica); his grandchildren: Barry, Kevin, Candice, Jonathan, Joshua, Ariel, Ridge, Jalecia, Duece and Layna; his sisters, Ivey Jackson, Earnestine Mitchell and Alma Eley, of Norfolk; a brother, Lewis Stephens, of Norfolk, and a host of other great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends.

He was preceded by his wife, Barbara; his granddaughter, Rachel; brothers Saul and Alfred; and his sister Ethel Lee.

Visitation will take place from noon to 1 p.m., and the service will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at Harris Funeral Home, 685 Carolina Road.
