Amazon has established a hiring and orientation hub for the company’s facilities in Hampton Roads, including a new robotics fulfillment center in Suffolk’s Northgate Commerce Park expected to open later this year.

Called the Amazon Career Center, it will be at 1989 S. Military Highway in Chesapeake and will process employees in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Virginia Beach as well as Suffolk.

Amazon has also announced the opening of two delivery stations in Hampton Roads, a 165,000-square-foot facility in Norfolk and a 111,600-square-foot facility in Hampton. The delivery stations are part of Amazon’s last-mile order process and part of its efforts to get products to customers faster by sending them from the fulfillment and sorting centers to the delivery stations and then loaded into delivery vehicles for drivers to take them directly to customers.

Suffolk’s fulfillment center will be hiring about 1,000 employees, and another Amazon fulfillment center about two miles away in Chesapeake is expected to have another 500 employees.

Amazon says the new delivery stations will add hundreds of full- and part-time jobs and provide hundreds of driver opportunities for its delivery service partners and flex drivers.

Since 2010, Amazon has hired more than 27,000 people in Virginia and established 15 delivery stations.

With the station launches, Amazon made a donation to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore and Virginia Peninsula Foodbank.

When complete, the Suffolk Amazon facility will be the largest industrial building in Virginia and  second-largest overall to the Pentagon.

The $230 million facility — according to the building permit for the site — will have a footprint of 822,833 square feet and, at 95 feet and four-and-a-half stories tall, will have an overall square footage of more than 3.8 million.

The nearby Chesapeake Amazon facility in Western Branch will be a 650,000-square-foot processing center that will handle bulk goods and break them down into smaller orders that will feed its supply chain.
