Keep Suffolk Beautiful will host a recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 25, in the parking lot of Northern Shores Elementary School, 6701 Respass Beach Road. The event is for Suffolk residents only.

Keep Suffolk Beautiful is excited to partner with Soles4Souls Inc. They will be onsite collecting unwanted shoes. Soles4Souls turns unwanted shoes and clothing into opportunity by keeping them from going to waste and putting them to good use: providing relief, creating jobs and empowering people to break the cycle of poverty. The organization repurposes products to supply its micro-enterprise, disaster relief and direct assistance programs. With locations and warehouses across three continents, Soles4Souls has been able to distribute more than 73 million pairs of shoes and pieces of clothing in 129 countries since 2006.

Keep Suffolk Beautiful is also proud to continue its partnership with Boy Scout Troop 16 who will be onsite to collect unserviceable U.S. flags. All U.S. Flags collected will be burned during a meaningful flag retirement ceremony in accordance with U.S. Code.

The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office also is encouraging residents to take advantage of secure document shredding. Sheriff E.C. Harris says, “Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the nation; thus, we must remain vigilant to safeguard our privacy.”

Items for recycling include:

  • Electronics (TV’s under 42 inches and no tube TVs)
  • Gently used clothing
  • Wares
  • Batteries
  • Plastic bottles and jugs #1 & #2
  • Cardboard, paper and magazines
  • Plastic bags
  • Glass containers

The drive will also be collecting household hazardous waste such as oil, gasoline, antifreeze, cleaners, propane tanks, pesticides, CFL lightbulbs and more. The disposal of such items is limited to five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste, and you must show a Suffolk ID.

Keep Suffolk Beautiful continues its support for local charity ForKids. Donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries, deodorant and all things that make bubbles such as hand soap and dish soap are welcome and needed.

The Lions Club will also be available to collect hearing aids and eyeglasses and sell brooms.

In addition, Suffolk Mosquito Control will be present with information on how to control mosquito populations at home and to give away free mosquito dunks to Suffolk residents.  Residents with a Suffolk ID can get a pack of two dunks with information on how best to use them.

All who attend are asked to wear masks and observe social distancing as they unload their vehicles.
