Cedar Point Club and the Virginia State Golf Association recently announced they have reached an agreement for Cedar Point Club to be the host site for the 2022 VSGA Men’s State Amateur Championship and the 2023 VSGA Women’s State Amateur Championship.

The 109th VSGA Men’s Amateur Championship will be held June 27 to July 1, 2022. The 98th VSGA Women’s Amateur Championship will take place in July 2023.

“We are very excited to bring two of our premier championships, the Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championships, to Cedar Point in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The VSGA and Cedar Point have enjoyed a great partnership over the years, and these two events will continue our strong relationship,” said VSGA Executive Director Matt Smiley.

“The first-class championship golf course, facilities and staff that Cedar Point offers create an ideal setting for the best players in the Commonwealth to compete,” Smiley continued. “Having been a part of many events at Cedar Point, I am certain that the experience will be great and the best player will be identified.”

The 2022 edition of the Men’s Amateur Championship will be the fourth hosted by Cedar Point Club. The event was last played there in 2009 and featured a thrilling comeback in the championship match as Brinson Paolini rallied from five down to defeat Lanto Griffin 2 up. Both have since gone on to play professional golf, with Griffin currently playing full time on the PGA Tour. Richmond’s Jeff Horn won the Amateur when Cedar Point hosted in 1982, and Hall of Famer Curtis Strange was the winner the first time the club hosted the championship in 1975.

The Women’s Amateur will be making its first stop at Cedar Point, though the club has hosted one major VSGA women’s championship (the Women’s Stroke Play) in 2001. With the 2023 Women’s Amateur, Cedar Point will have hosted every VSGA major championship at least once.

“On behalf of the members and staff of Cedar Point Club, we are honored the VSGA has once again selected us to host the elite amateurs of Virginia,” said Cedar Point Club President Cameron Robinett. “In 2009, we celebrated the club’s 45th anniversary in conjunction with the Men’s State Amateur. The collective sense of pride our membership displayed is one of my favorite club memories, and I look forward to making more memories over the next two years with these two prestigious events.”

Overall, Cedar Point has hosted 10 VSGA championships, most recently the VSGA Four-Ball Championship in 2018 and the VSGA Mid-Amateur Championship in 2015.
