Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to a chemical exposure of a worker late Monday morning at the 100 block of QVC Drive.

Emergency Communications was contacted at 11 a.m., and the first unit arrived on scene at 11:09 a.m.

Engine 3, Ladder 3, and Medic 3 arrived to find a single patient complaining of difficulty breathing from an inhalation chemical exposure. The patient was unloading a container in the off loading dock when the exposure occurred. The patient was evaluated, treated and transported to a local hospital by Suffolk Fire & Rescue medics.

The container, still located in the off loading dock, was moved and isolated by the building’s staff and Rescue 1 and Ladder 3’s crew performed investigation, air monitoring and product identification in the container. Virginia Department of Emergency Management was contacted, and the Hazardous Materials Officer responded to the scene. The fire department was working with property management to isolate the chemical that was in the container and the contents.

The incident remains under investigation by the Suffolk Fire Department.

Responding units included Battalion 1, Engine 3, Ladder 3, Medic 3, Rescue 1, EMS-1, Safety 1, Car 1, VDEM HMO.
