Hiring hasn’t yet begun for Suffolk’s Amazon robotics fulfillment center that is expected to open in the first quarter of 2022, but the company is hiring 2,200 seasonal workers at locations across Hampton Roads.

Some may receive an immediate contingent offer for seasonal roles, with an average starting pay of $18 per hour, possible sign-on bonuses of up to $3,000 and an additional $3 per hour depending on shifts in a number of locations. The company is also offering the possibility of transitioning into long-term jobs.

The seasonal jobs in Hampton Roads represent more than 59% of such jobs the company is hiring for in Virginia, and they come in addition to 2,700 full and part-time operations jobs the company announced for the state previously.

A new, 165,000-square-foot Amazon delivery station off Sewells Point Road in Norfolk, which will eventually handle products coming from Suffolk and services Norfolk and Virginia Beach, was humming on a recent morning. The facility has been open since June.

“The facility in Suffolk, when that comes online, they’re who provides us with the merchandise,” said Jay Lucado, site lead for the Amazon Norfolk delivery station. “That’s a fulfillment center. We receive goods from fulfillment centers all over the United States. They truck in here. When Suffolk comes up and available, it’ll shorten the distance and get us our packages even that much quicker.”

A similar Amazon delivery station off of Campostella Road in Chesapeake services that locality as well as Portsmouth, Suffolk, Franklin and parts of northeastern North Carolina. Another new 116,000-square-foot delivery station in Hampton services areas on the Peninsula.

Ricky Derring, senior staffing manager with Amazon Workforce Staffing, said it has not begun hiring for Suffolk’s 3.8 million-square-foot robotics fulfillment center and the nearby 650,000 square foot import processing center in Western Branch, but expects to soon.

“We will be doing a lot of hiring in this market for those sites as well,” Derring said.

The two adjacent facilities will be hiring about 1,500 people — 1,000 in Suffolk and 500 in Chesapeake.
