The Salvation Army Suffolk Corps is encouraging people to register for Christmas assistance by Oct. 31 — and it also needs people who have begun registering to go complete their applications.

Sunday at 5 p.m. is the deadline to register for assistance for Christmas, said Capt. Angel Simmons of the Suffolk Corps. The Suffolk Corps Angel Tree program provides assistance in Suffolk, Franklin, Isle of Wight, Southampton and Surry.

People can register by visiting www.saangeltree.org, clicking on “no invitation code” and using their ZIP code. The application then asks for applicant information — the adult applying — and then on the next pages for information about the children in the family.

Simmons said a lot of applications have the adult’s information filled out, but they haven’t filled out information on their children.

Like last year’s distribution, this year toys will be chosen for the children, so it is important that information be provided.

“That’s why it’s important for them to put the things their children like so they can get things they really enjoy and are age appropriate,” Simmons said.

People applying for the assistance will have to upload a picture ID, birth certificates for all children 12 and under, and proof of residency.

Any emergency situations that happen between now and Christmas, like a job loss, will try to be accommodated, Simmons said.

She added that people wanting to adopt angels are also needed.

“We have plenty that are already registered that companies or individuals can adopt a child or family and help them have a great Christmas,” Simmons said.
