Preliminary work to replace the Carolina Road Bridge over Cypress Swamp has begun, with the project expected to take about nine months.

The replacement will include a new, 100-foot-long concrete span along with asphalt approaches. The city says the bridge replacement is needed because it is functionally obsolete and because of the weight restrictions of the existing structure.

The existing bridge is a four-span concrete T‐beam superstructure on a concrete substructure spanning 90 feet.

The preliminary work began Nov. 1, and Carolina Road around the bridge will close Nov. 29. A detour will be provided.

The bridge is scheduled to reopen by late July 2022.
