A Virginia State Police trooper shot and killed a man following a police chase and crash that killed his female passenger, police stated on Saturday evening.

At 4:54 p.m. Saturday, the Newport News Police Department advised Virginia State Police their officers were attempting to pull over a white 2007 Chevrolet sedan that was traveling south on Interstate 664 toward Suffolk.

According to a Newport News Police Department press release, that department had attempted a traffic stop on the sedan in reference to an aggravated assault, suspected abduction and suspected DUI in the area of Hogan Drive and Jefferson Avenue.

As the chase entered Suffolk, Virginia State Police took the lead on the chase, with Newport News assisting, a Virginia State Police press release stated.

The suspect’s vehicle never exceeded the posted speed limit. As it approached the exit ramp from Interstate 664 to Route 58, the suspect vehicle and trooper’s vehicle made contact, causing both to run off the roadway. The suspect’s vehicle ran off the roadway into an embankment and overturned in the tree line. The passenger was located deceased at the crash scene, while the driver fled on foot into the tree line, the press release stated.

Within minutes, a trooper located the suspect walking along the westbound lanes of Route 58, the press release stated. The trooper stopped his patrol car on the shoulder and approached the man, but “an altercation ensued during which the trooper was assaulted by the male suspect,” the press release stated. The trooper then shot the man, and he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The man was identified by state police as Brian Michael Price, 45, of the 800 block of Sagebrook Run, Chesapeake. The woman was identified as Amity Jo Grey, 47, of the 100 block of Shirley Road, Newport News.

State police are still in the process of confirming both people’s identity and notifying next of kin.

The trooper who shot the man was treated at the scene for minor injuries from his encounter with the man, the press release stated. In accordance with state police policy, the trooper has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation being conducted by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Chesapeake Field Office.

During the incident, westbound traffic on Route 58 at the I-664 interchange was heavy, suggesting that several motorists may have witnessed the incident. As of late Saturday night, the scene was still active. Interstate 664 southbound at Route 58, and Route 58 west/east at I-664, were shut down for several hours during the course of the investigation. The Virginia Department of Transportation currently has detours in place. Motorists should avoid this area and monitor @511HamptonRoads for information on detours and closures.
