A Suffolk native is coming back to share her new book with her hometown.

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is hosting “A Night with Author Angel Ellis Khoury” at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Center. Khoury will read from her new book “Between Tides” and discuss her perspective as a former editor and publisher and now novelist.

During the reading and discussion, folks can ask questions about the book and her writing process. The event is free but will have a cash bar with beer and wine to support the Suffolk Center.

“Between Tides” is a story Khoury stumbled upon more than 20 years ago when doing research for her book on the history of Manteo, N.C. She met a woman whose father disappeared between tides. He was a postkeeper at a life saving station and had left his first wife in Cape Cod, Mass. The story stuck with Khoury and developed into the fictional novel based on the ideas of how this man’s actions affected those around him.

“I am reading it for the third time,” said Joyce Trump, moderator for the event. “The story is fascinating, and she uses such beautiful language.”

Trump was a teacher and then superintendent for Suffolk Public Schools for 37 years. During her teaching years, she taught Khoury for eighth- and ninth-grade world cultures and 12th-grade government at Suffolk High School. Trump remembers Khoury as a brilliant student who she hoped would become a published author.

Khoury now lives on Roanoke Island in North Carolina, where she is surrounded by history. With her family still in Suffolk, Khoury is looking forward to coming back to her alma mater — the SCCA is housed in the renovated and repurposed Suffolk High School building — to share her story and see old friends.

“I’m really excited,” said Khoury. “It’s extremely special to come back to Suffolk to see old classmates and friends.”

“Between Tides” was chosen by Publisher’s Weekly as one of five indie books for the fall of 2021. The book will also have a review in the New York Times book review on Nov. 21. In addition, the book has sold across the country — a friend of Khoury’s informed her he saw it in a bookstore in Washington state.
