As we prepare for a holiday that urges us to give thanks for all of our many blessings, there are two groups of folks in the city that are preparing to help those less fortunate enjoy a Thanksgiving meal as well.

As you can see in reporting in today’s newspaper, Suffolk United Inc. is hosting a free Thanksgiving food giveaway this Saturday. LeOtis Williams is also hosting a giveaway of turkey and fixings this Saturday.

These two events have become a staple for the city on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Community-minded folks like LeOtis Williams, the leaders of Suffolk United, and all of the volunteers who come out to help make both events safe and successful are the backbone of our community.

Between the two, these giveaways are expected to help more than 1,000 families have an enjoyable Thanksgiving meal. While there are many things to be thankful for lately, having great folks like this in our community is at the top of our list.

Many folks in our community are still struggling, whether as a result of the pandemic or other issues. If you’re not one of them, but you know someone who is, reach out and offer a hand this holiday season.
