One dead, one injured in shooting

One person is dead and one injured after a shooting Sunday afternoon.

The shooting was reported at 3:01 p.m. at the 1100 block of Cogic Square, according to a city press release. Responding police discovered two victims, one of whom succumbed to their injuries. The other was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The victim of the fatality has been identified as Jason Javon Lewis, 21, of Portsmouth. The injured victim, Kareem Jamal Hunter, 24, of Suffolk, remains hospitalized.

“Citizens in the area can expect to see an increased police presence in the community as the investigation continues,” a city press release stated.
