Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A local Christmas tradition is back again to help folks in Suffolk remember what this time of year is all about.

Wilroy Baptist Church is having its Christmas Panorama Drive-Through program from 7 to 8 p.m. Dec. 17, 18 and 19 at 306 Williams Road.

The church has put on this three-night Christmas panorama for many years and has become a tradition for many folks. The actors are ready once again to portray scenes of the life of Jesus.

“This is a gift from our church to the community,” said Sheila Morris, one of the program organizers. “It’s something to tell the real reason for the season. We can get caught up in the hustle and bustle of buying gifts and this is a great reminder of the real reason for Christmas.”

Folks can stay in the warmth of their vehicles as they drive through to see scenes of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem, the manger scene, Jesus at the temple as a boy, Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, the crucifixion, the resurrection and the ascension.

Each car is given a program at the beginning to explain scenes and provide context. It’s an excellent resource for kids or those who may not be as familiar with Jesus’ life. At the end, visitors will receive a goodie bag as a thank you for coming through. A minister will also be present to answer any questions about the scenes.

“It’s free to come through,” said Morris. “Jesus’ gift of salvation is free, and so is our program. We encourage everyone to come through, whether they know a lot about Jesus or not.”

Over the years, the program has received many thanks and compliments from those who drive through. Many come back year after year to help start their Christmas season.
