Get in the holiday spirit with brass concert

The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts in partnership with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will present The VSO Holiday Brass Concert on Dec. 17.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with pre-show holiday festivities, and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Reserved seating tickets are $28, $31, $34, and $37.

The bold sounds of the Virginia Symphony brass section will ring in the holidays with a blast. Experience the festive sounds of the season in a concert filled with wit, virtuosity, and the glorious music of the holidays — featuring the VSO brass and percussion sections in an all-new program with Helen Martell as the evening’s conductor. Helen Martell has dedicated her life’s work to music education and orchestral conducting.  For more than 26 years, she has taught all levels of orchestra for the Chesapeake and Norfolk Public Schools. In August 2021, she became the director of education and staff conductor with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to hearing the world class VSO Holiday Brass, the festive evening features a family holiday sing-a-long and a performance by Viva Vivace, Nansemond River High School’s choral ensemble.

Guests are invited to come early and take a photo with the Jolly Old Elf himself, Santa. Enjoy pre-show crooning by The Doorway Singers, Hampton Roads’ premier vocal group, as they stroll the Center in perfect four-part harmony. Satisfy your sweet tooth pre-show with yummy treats from The Mad Batter. Thirsty? Pour Favor Coffee Shop will be selling hot chocolate and coffee, or relax with a pre-show adult beverage, available at the cash bar.

Come early for pre-show holiday shopping in Jester’s Gallery Shop. Meet the artists of Jester’s and shop their expanded inventory from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Jester’s features more than 70 local artists from Virginia and North Carolina with unique gift ideas for everyone: pottery, jewelry, paintings, wooden bowls, college fish, scarves, ornaments, and more! Take time pre-show to stroll the center’s two award winning art galleries for the closing reception of “Out of the Shadows, Into the Light,” featuring 24 artists from the Southside Artists Association, with 57 paintings, and three wood-turned pieces.
