Carolina Road near Cypress Chapel Road will close Jan. 3 as the Carolina Road Bridge over Cypress Swamp will be replaced, according to the city’s Department of Public Works.

Detours will be in place for both cars and trucks.

The road had been scheduled to close Nov. 29 to allow for the replacement of the existing bridge, a four-span concrete T-beam superstructure on a concrete substructure spanning 90 feet.

However, due to delays in Dominion Energy completing needed utility locations, the road closure and work on the bridge were delayed.

The bridge replacement will include a new, 100-foot-long concrete span along with asphalt approaches. According to the city, the old bridge is being replaced due to its functional obsolescence and weight restrictions of the existing structure.
