Suffolk Public Schools will start its school day on a two-hour delay for students and staff on Tuesday.

Inclement weather, including snow, affected the city on Monday. A nighttime low temperature of 22 was predicted, meaning there is the likelihood of ice on the roads.

“Any standing water on roadways will turn into black ice tonight as temperatures drop below freezing,” stated the hazardous weather outlook for the city from the National Weather Service Wakefield office.

The two-hour delay means bus pickups for all students begin two hours later than normal; breakfast will not be served, but lunch will be served; and the dismissal time remains the same unless otherwise announced.

The school district had previously canceled all after-school extracurricular activities for the entire week, including athletic practices and games, club and organization activities, after-school tutoring, Z-Block classes, the Jan. 8 Saturday Academy session, and others. This move was made with the aim of keeping COVID-19 case numbers at bay.

“The decision was made in response to the increasing cases,” school district spokeswoman Anthonette Ward stated Monday.

Among other delays announced Monday, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy also will operate under a two-hour delay Tuesday.
