One girl remained in critical condition late Wednesday following a three-alarm apartment fire earlier that afternoon in the 400 block of Smith Street.

She was one of two children who were rescued from the burning apartment building. There was no word on the condition of the other child. Both were taken to the hospital after being evaluated for possible smoke inhalation.

One firefighter being treated for heat exhaustion has been released from the hospital, according to a news release, while the other two firefighters are still in the hospital in stable condition after suffering what was believed to be heat exhaustion, according to Fire Chief Mike Barakey.

Eleven people — five adults and six children — have been displaced as a result of the fire. The American Red Cross has been contacted to help those affected.

Fire Marshall Chris Cornwell said those who were in the apartment at the time of the fire were alerted to it by a working smoke detector.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire was first reported at 1:23 p.m. Wednesday, with initial reports indicating that several people were trapped inside the Smith Street apartment building, located between Linden Avenue and St. James Avenue.

The fire was declared under control by 3:15 p.m.
