Memorial Day ceremonies planned

The Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery will host its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 9:30 a.m. at the cemetery, located at 5310 Milners Road.

David Buchy, commander of American Legion Post 88, will serve as master of ceremonies.

The keynote speaker will be U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Scott A. Beeson, who will be introduced by Gerald L. Rhoads, past commander of the American Legion Department of Virginia.

Members of the Horton Wreath Society will place American flags on all graves prior to the ceremony.

The Horton Cemetery is one of three state veterans cemeteries operated by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.

American Legion Norman R. Matthews Post 57 will conduct its annual Memorial Day observation of placing memorial wreaths at the war memorial markers at 11 a.m. at the Cedar Hill entrance on Mahan Street.

Guest speaker will be Cmdr. Jon Cantor, U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer, USS Boise (SSN 764). Call 757-582-5668 for more information.

 

American Legion Post 49 will host a traditional Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Isle of Wight Veteran’s Memorial in Smithfield.

A lunch will follow at the Post, 818 S. Church St. in Smithfield. In event of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place in the Smithfield Center.
