Grady named baseball Player of the Year

Nansemond River senior shortstop Clay Grady has been named the Class 5 Baseball Player of the Year by the Virginia High School League.

Grady, who has signed with Virginia Tech, batted .465 with 23 RBIs and 27 runs scored. In addition, the Class 5 Region B Player of the Year and 2022 All-Tidewater Baseball Player of the Year had 12 doubles and four triples this season.

Grady led Nansemond River to the Class 5 state semifinals, where the Warriors fell to Glen Allen on a walk-off homer in extra innings.

Nansemond River senior outfielder Ayden Stuffel joined Grady on the Class 5 all-state first team.

Senior first baseman Grayson Fitzwater and junior third baseman Jordan Crosland made the all-state second team.

Douglas Freeman head coach Ray Moore was named Coach of the Year. He guided his squad to a 22-4 record and the Class 5 state baseball title with a 4-0 win over rival Glen Allen in the championship game.
