Suffolk and the surrounding Western Tidewater and Hampton Roads regions will be under a heat advisory Wednesday as temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-90s and the heat index to rise above 100 degrees. 

The National Weather Service’s Wakefield office expects the heat index to reach 106 degrees as the high temperature in Suffolk is forecast to be 95 degrees with showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. The heat index is expected to stay above 100 into the early evening. 

The heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, and the advisory calls for drinking plenty of fluids and staying in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun. It also advises checking on older relatives and neighbors and never leaving young children or pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. If working outside, people should schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. 

High temperatures through Friday are expected to reach the low 90s, with rain chances of 50% to 60%.
