Suffolk Public Works Department advises the U.S. Route 58 Holland Road Corridor Widening project is about to reach a significant milestone and enter phase two.

“The major components of phase one required installing stormwater infrastructure and constructing two temporary lanes on the north side of Route 58,” Project Manager Mitch Conner said in a news release from the City of Suffolk. “Stormwater infrastructure is complete, and with the temporary lanes in place, the contractor is preparing to shift traffic, allowing them to work more freely on widening the south side”.

In early August, the contractor will shift the westbound traffic west of Grove Avenue onto the new temporary lanes, according to the release. The contractor will then reconfigure the vacated westbound lanes to accommodate eastbound traffic.  This involves changing lane markings, traffic signals and installing barrier rail. The contractor can then safely transfer the current eastbound traffic onto the reconfigured westbound lanes. With traffic shifted, the need for daily lane closures is reduced.

The flow of traffic east of Grove Avenue will remain the same until completion of the entire project as this section of the design requires little expansion of the south side, the news release stated.

A 35 mph speed limit is now in effect through the entire three-mile work zone.
