Man faces 23 charges for pursuit that ends in North Carolina

A Suffolk man faces 23 charges, a mix of felonies and misdemeanors, in connection with a pursuit that started in the city and ended with his arrest in Gates County, North Carolina.

Krys Alexander Karyshyn was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 3 by the Gates County Sheriff’s Office, according to a news release issued by Suffolk police Friday, Aug. 5. 

City police said the call that led to this interstate chase involving Karyshyn began at 4:52 p.m., Aug. 3, when Suffolk Police Dispatch received a report of a reckless driver who had been acting suspiciously in the 1100 block of Carolina Road. Officers located the suspect on Whaleyville Boulevard and conducted a traffic stop and the suspect driver appeared impaired.

Before further investigation could be completed, police said in the release that the vehicle sped off in an attempt to elude officers. Officers continued to pursue the suspect’s vehicle on Whaleyville Boulevard. 

During the pursuit, the police report states that Karyshyn’s vehicle collided with a Suffolk police vehicle and fled.  No injuries occurred in Suffolk as a result of this incident. 

Eventually the suspect vehicle fled into Gates County and Suffolk Police units discontinued their pursuit, according to the release.  The sheriff’s office in Gates County later advised that their officers had taken the suspect/owner of the vehicle into custody. 

 Suffolk Police currently have 23 active warrants for Karyshyn —11 are felony and 12 are misdemeanor — they filed in connection with the pursuit. The police department news release said Karyshyn faces these charges of: three counts aggravated assault on police attempted (felonies); eight counts eluding police (felonies); eight counts obstruction of justice (misdemeanors); two counts reckless driving – private property (misdemeanors); one count reckless driving on roadway (misdemeanor); and one count hit and run (misdemeanor).
