Tommie Lawrence Sr., 103, was smiling on his front porch Tuesday, Aug. 16 as family members arrived to present him with gifts and wish him happy birthday. In talking with him, he still has a great sense of humor, a sharp mind and can still remember his high school days in the 1940s.

Born on Aug. 16, 1919, Lawrence graduated from the former East Suffolk High School in 1941. The East Suffolk Alumni Association held its school reunion from Friday, Aug.11 through Sunday, August 14th. During the reunion banquet, the association recognized him as one of the oldest living members of his class.

Lawrence worked at the Naval base until he retired. He also worked as a landscaping and groundskeeping professional for many years. Many people also remember him serving as the custodian of East End Baptist Church at its former location on East Washington Street in Suffolk.

When asked about his advice for his longevity, he responds: “Love God, love your fellow man, have faith, and pray about everything.”
