A Suffolk man faces three misdemeanor charges after officials confiscated a handgun recovered from the backpack of a first grade student at Oakland Elementary School.
Keydran Leary, 27, was served with multiple misdemeanor warrants Friday, Sept. 9 in connection to the incident. The charges include allowing access to firearms by children, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and reckless handling of a firearm.
On Thursday, Sept. 8, Suffolk Police officers responded to Oakland Elementary and recovered a handgun that school administrators found in a first grader’s backpack.
The officers’ investigation revealed that during the previous day a household member placed a handgun in the student’s backpack and it was never removed. According to a police department news release, the student then inadvertently carried the weapon to school. The weapon was not brandished or pointed at any individual during this incident.
City officers responded to the school after being alerted by Suffolk Public School administrators of a student believed to be in possession of a weapon while on the school campus. The student was promptly searched by school administrators who found the weapon. It was confiscated by school administrators who immediately turned it over to the Suffolk Police.
There will be no further updates on this incident, police said in their release.
