The City of Suffolk’s Parks and Recreation Department recently achieved reaccreditation at the National Recreation and Park Association annual conference.

The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies is the only national accreditation of park and recreation agencies throughout the United States. Accreditation is a valuable measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management, and service to the community.

The Parks and Recreation Department recently achieved reaccreditation, having first achieved accreditation in 2017. In order to maintain their accreditation, the department must undergo a reaccreditation process every five years.

There are currently only 199 accredited agencies across the United States. The process requires department staff to provide evidence of meeting 154 standards in the following categories: agency authority; planning, organization and administration; human resources; financial management; programs and services; facility and land use; public safety and law enforcement; risk management; and evaluation and assessment.

Agencies must meet 148 standards in order to achieve reaccreditation. Suffolk Parks and Recreation met all 154 standards. For more information, call Emily Upton at 757.514.7256 or email eupton@suffolkva.us.
