Suffolk schools closed Monday as effects of hurricane continue flooding issues in city

As the remnants of Hurricane Ian continue to affect the area, Suffolk Public Schools will not hold classes Monday.

In a notice posted on its Facebook page, SPS officials posted a notice that schools be will closed Monday, Oct. 3 for all students and staff.

Flooding issues continue for Suffolk and the region.

The National Weather Service office in Wakefield has issued a coastal flood warning for Suffolk that will remain in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. The warning also is in effect for Surry, James City, Isle of Wight and Newport News counties.

Two to three feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

The NWS warning states that severe flooding will cause extensive inundation and flooding of numerous roads and buildings resulting in a significant threat to property and life. Water will be 2 to 3 feet or more above ground level in some areas. Severe flooding will extend inland from the waterfront and shoreline flooding homes, businesses and isolating some neighborhoods. Numerous roads will be impassable under several feet of water and cars submerged. Some areas may need to be evacuated.

Gusty north winds to 30 to 40 mph are expected Monday and Tuesday.

There is good news for the upcoming festivities as the annual Suffolk Peanut Festival approaches.

Despite erroneous reports of cancellation, festival officials issued a news release saying the 44th Annual Suffolk Peanut Fest will move forward as planned, Oct. 6 – 9, at the Suffolk Executive Airport.
