Suffolk Public Schools has begun implementing a new procedure for students to have clear book bags to help enforce safety. This implementation is currently only for both middle and high schools.

Division Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon III spoke about the change and the school system’s promotion of safety in a statement.

“SPS middle and high schools currently conduct book bag and metal detector searches at random” Gordon said. “However, by implementing this initiative, we hope to increase student and school safety and improve the efficiency of random safety checks throughout the school year.”

He went on to say that the clear bag initiative is on a volunteer basis.

“Students and their parents will have the option to use clear book bags,” Gordon said. “This initiative is currently only for our secondary schools — middle and high — and is one of the division’s new safety measures.”
