Keep Suffolk Beautiful hosts its next Recycling Drive and Tire Amnesty Day for Suffolk residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Public Works Operations facility at 800 Carolina Rd.

This is a free event and a great chance for folks looking to recycle and responsibly dispose of items laying around the house, garage, shed, and backyard before the holiday season begins, KSB officials said in a news release.

This event offers several special services. Tires, which cannot be disposed of in weekly residential trash pickups, are accepted from residents with a Suffolk identification. They must be under 22 inches and not be attached to rims. Tires from commercial businesses are accepted.

Stations where residents can drop off large appliances and scrap metal are planned for the day, according to Keep Suffolk Beautiful. Appliances such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, freezers, stoves, hot water heaters and A/C units will be accepted.

“The Recycling Drive and Tire Amnesty Day, as always, promises to be a great event,” spokesperson for Keep Suffolk Beautiful spokesperson Audrey Dennis said. “It goes a long way in ensuring that things such as tires and hazardous materials are disposed of properly. We hope residents take full advantage of the many free services we are providing.”

The Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is set to be onsite to assist residents with document shredding — another free service the event provides. Please note that during busy times, document shredding will limit residents to three grocery bags of documents to be shredded.

Many other items are accepted for disposal or recycling, including:

• Electronics (No tube TV’s or TV’s lager than 42 inches)
• Gently used clothing and shoes
• Wares
• Batteries
• Plastic bottles and jugs No. 1 and No. 2
• Cardboard, paper, and magazines
• Plastic bags
• Glass containers
• U.S. flags that need to be properly decommissioned

SPSA Waste Solutions is set to collect household hazardous waste from any resident with a Suffolk ID. This includes oil, gasoline, antifreeze, cleaners, propane tanks, paint, pesticides, CFL lightbulbs and more. The disposal of such items is limited to five gallons of liquid or 75 pounds of solid waste.

“Recycling comes in so many forms — not just paper, bottles, and cans,” Keep Suffolk Beautiful Chair Kathy Russel said. “Help us be a good steward of the Earth by recycling items over and above what can be put in your blue recycling cart. We are excited to have another Recycling Drive and Tire Amnesty Day, which has always been a big success.”

Donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries, deodorant and all things that make bubbles such as hand soap and dish soap are needed and accepted to go to ForKids. Other participating organizations, such as the Lion’s Club, are collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids. They also plan to sell brooms on site.
