Early voting in the 2022 General Election has ended and Tuesday brings the final day for in-person voting in Suffolk and across Virginia.

Suffolk General Registrar Burdette Lawrence said this year’s early voting has been going “quite smoothly.”

But what about the response?

“I’m happy to say the response has been beyond my expectations,” she said. “We have had nearly 7,000 early voters!” This is about 10% of total voters in the city, which boasts 70,730 registered voters, according to state election board reports for 2022.

Lawrence’s estimated number was from Thursday and more people could vote after that with three-plus days of early voting left to go at the time of the interview.

While the early voting ended Saturday, Nov. 5, absentee ballots are accepted through election day. Those need to be turned into the registrar’s office or postmarked by Nov. 8.

According to the registrar’s website, absentee ballots can be dropped off at one of three locations on or before election day (Sept. 23-Nov. 8).

  • Voter Registration Office, 440 Market Street, 1st Floor, Suffolk, VA 23434
  • North Suffolk Public Library,2000 Bennett’s Creek Park Road, Suffolk, VA 23435
  • Suffolk Executive Airport, 1200 Gene Bolton Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434

The website notes that all drop boxes will be locked at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8. It also states that all ballot drop boxes are under constant video surveillance.

On election day, Nov. 8, a ballot drop box (a blue canvas bag) will be located inside each polling precinct from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for voters to take their ballots to their polling location, if they choose to do so.

“If voters requested a mail-in ballot, please bring it with them to early vote or to the polls on Tuesday if they decide to vote in person,” Lawrence said Thursday.

Mailed absentee ballots must carry a postmark of no later than Nov. 8 and be received by the registrar’s office by noon, Monday, Nov. 14, according to the registrar’s website. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1966, Suffolk, VA 23434-1966.

For those looking to take the traditional voting route and head to the polls Tuesday, they can cast their ballots between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8. Local voters make their choices for the U.S. Representative in the 2nd Congressional District, and local races in the Chuckatuck, Cypress, Suffolk and Holy Neck boroughs for city council and school board.

For many heading to cast those ballots, Lawrence said there have been changes to many polling locations across the city.

“Yes, there have been extensive changes and additions to the precinct locations from previous years,” Lawrence said. She shared a complete list of the locations by precinct in each of the boroughs, with the complete street address for each one.
