A Suffolk man died in a two-vehicle crash in Portsmouth Monday morning that involved a passenger car and a dump truck.
Virginia State Police report the crash occurred at about 6:43 a.m., Monday, Jan. 9 on Interstate 264, westbound, at Greenwood Drive, Portsmouth.
James Byron McRoy, 25, of the 5600 block of Mineral Springs Road, Suffolk died in the crash, VSP reports.
Preliminary state police investigations reveal that McRoy, driver of a 2004 Honda sedan, was traveling eastbound on I-264, lost control of the vehicle and crossed over the grassy median, striking a dump truck that was traveling westbound on Interstate 264. The impact of the crash caused the dump truck to run off the road and into the tree line.
McRoy’s vehicle was fully engulfed by flames as a result of the crash, the news release states. McRoy was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the 2015 Kenworth dump truck, Willie Bernard Foster of Rose Avenue, Portsmouth, was transported with non-life threatening injuries.
State police did not release any additional information on Foster’s condition.
The crash did cause traffic delays on I-264 throughout the morning as VSP investigated and cleared the scene of the vehicles and debris.
