The Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk begins the next phase of its Night Stay Shelter program for those in Suffolk who are homeless during the ongoing winter season.

Starting Feb. 1 through March 28, CAPS will have guests arrive at the Seaboard Train Station located at 326 N. Main St. Checkout day is Wednesday, March 29.

Upon arrival at 6 p.m., guests will fill out the necessary paperwork for gaining shelter. Likewise, guests must pass an alcohol breathalyzer and must not be a sex offender.

At 6:30 p.m., the church bus will arrive to take verified guests to the corresponding church hosting shelter services. A different church will provide shelter to guests each week along with showers, dinner, breakfast and a bagged lunch to go.

The next morning at 6:30 a.m., the church bus will arrive to transport guests back to the station with an estimated time of arrival of 7 a.m.

“Our CAPS night stay shelter program will run very closely to how we ran the month of January at the Suffolk Salvation Army building. Now guests will go to the Main Street train bus station to access our program,” CAPS Services and Night Stay Administrator Jan Pruden said.

She praised the different churches for assisting and offering hospitality each week.

“We know that the weather has a great impact on guests needing services,” Pruden said. “Right now we are finalizing church locations throughout Suffolk and have a number of churches hosting in Northern Suffolk this year.”
