Suffolk residents have the opportunity March 25 to dispose of items for recycling, including tires, and clear out old paperwork that needs to be shredded.

Keep Suffolk Beautiful is hosting a 

A recycling drive and Tire Amnesty Day hosted by Keep Suffolk Beautiful runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Saturday, March 25 at the Public Works Operations facility, 800 Carolina Rd.  

The free event provides city residents an opportunity to properly recycle or dispose of items they may have accumulated in their homes over the winter months. 

Suffolk Sheriff’s Office and Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office are going to be on site to manage the free document shredding. 

“Identity theft is an ever-present concern for people, and shredding documents is a way people can help protect themselves,” Sheriff E. C. Harris said in a news release. “We look forward to supporting this event and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.” 

Deputies also are available to answer any questions about identification protection.

Tire amnesty is another large part of the event.

Residents are encouraged to bring any unwanted rimless tires that are 22 inches or less. There are no limits on the number of tires a homeowner can bring; however, they must show a Suffolk identification. Keep Suffolk Beautiful does reserve the right to stop accepting tires depending on the quantity collected.  Tires from commercial businesses will not be accepted.  

Many other items will be taken for disposal or recycling, including: electronics (no tube televisions or flat screens larger than 42 inches); gently used clothing; wares; batteries; plastic bottles and jugs No. 1 and No. 2; cardboard, paper and magazines; plastic bags; large appliances; and glass containers.

SPSA Waste Solutions also is set to be on site to collect household hazardous waste, which is limited to either 75 pounds or five liquid gallons for those providing proof of Suffolk residency. Items that can be dropped off include: oil, gasoline, cleaners, propane tanks, paint, pesticides, CFL light bulbs and more.

Those with old eyeglasses or hearing aids can bring them to the Suffolk Lion’s Club. Anyone with U.S. flags that need to be properly decommissioned can drop them off with the Boy Scouts.

“We are excited to have another recycling drive and Tire Amnesty Day and we encourage everyone to share the news of this event with neighbors,” 

Kathy Russell, chairman of Keep Suffolk Beautiful, said. “It is a great opportunity to clean out the house, garage and shed!”

Keep Suffolk Beautiful officials said they also are excited to bring in a new partner, the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center. Donations of non-perishable food items, toiletries, deodorant and all things that make bubbles such as hand soap and dish soap are needed and will be given out at their downtown Suffolk food pantry.

Lorna Slaughter of the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center said the average person that participates in the recycling drives clearly understands that this benefits our community and the environment. 

“It is in that same vein of thought that I would encourage all who participate to consider recycling the food in their pantries as well,” she said. “When you donate food you are also helping to promote access to goods that are vital to the health and wellness of our neighbors in need and our overall community.”

Keep Suffolk Beautiful officials also expressed their appreciation for the broad support and participation that includes Suffolk Sheriff’s Office, Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, TFC Recycling, SPSA, Suffolk Public Works, Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center, Soles 4 Souls, Suffolk Lion’s Club, Boy Scouts, Goodwill and Shred-it.
