Lakeland given all clear after lockdown; student found to have gel ‘toy’ gun

Police placed Lakeland High School in lockdown Monday morning after officials received reports of a student with a weapon.

Suffolk Police are investigating the incident on the campus of Lakeland High, located in the 200 block of Kenyon Road, after the city’s emergency communications received the report at 10:05 a.m. Monday, May 1.

Suffolk Police responded to the school after being alerted by Suffolk Public School administrators of a student believed to be in possession of a weapon while on the school campus.

The school was placed on lockdown and searched by Suffolk Police. 

The student was promptly located and searched by Suffolk Police and was found to be in possession of a soft gel “toy” plastic gun, according to a department news release. 

The suspect, a 14-year-old male, was taken into custody without incident. There are no injuries reported. 

The building was given the all-clear at 10:56 a.m. Suffolk Police will provide enhanced security at the school for the remainder of the day. 

The incident remains under investigation. Police said there is no further information available for release.
