 Given the drastic rise in real estate and personal property values in recent years, Suffolk City Treasurer Ronald H. Williams is hosting the first Tax Relief Seminar to help local residents

Set for 2-4 p.m. Monday, May 22 in City Council Chambers at Suffolk City Hall, 442 W Washington St., it will cover topics covered such as personal property tax relief opportunities on vehicles, given by Commissioner of the Revenue Susan Draper.

An overview of relief opportunities offered by the City Assessor’s Office will be presented by City Assessor Holt Butt. Harry Cromer, director of the Suffolk Department of Social Services, is set to provide information related to applying for real estate tax relief, and there will be time at the end for participants to ask questions of the presenters and receive counseling regarding tax relief applications. 

“There are a few different real estate and personal property tax relief options available to our citizens, particularly the elderly, disabled, and to our disabled veterans, and I want them to be aware of what they may qualify for,” Williams said. 

There is no cost to attend the event, but to ensure adequate seating and materials, it is requested that those wanting to attend register in advance to Chief Deputy Treasurer Andrew Owen, the event’s coordinator, by calling 757-514-4288 or emailing citytreasurer@suffolkva.us.

“Our goal is for the attendees to leave the event with a better understanding of the personal property and real estate tax relief processes, and for them to apply for and be granted every form of relief for which they may be qualified,” Owen said. “We want to provide as much tax relief as possible to everyone who is qualified.”
