On the heels of completing the first undefeated regular season in school history, the (2)King’s Fork Bulldogs took one step closer to a state championship Thursday when they played host to the (7)Bethel Bruins.

Keontae Bumpers put the Bulldogs on the board in 12 seconds, taking the opening kick-off to the house en route to a dominant 49-7 win in the Class 5 Region A quarterfinal. The kick return touchdown was the first of the season for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs found paydirt on its first two offensive possessions. The first came on a 20-yard touchdown run up the middle by Javon Ford. D’Andre Artis-Boone dropped a dime to Darryl Wilson with 5:58 left in the opening quarter to go up 21-7.

Bethel quarterback Adon Chenault put the Bruins on the board on a keeper from 3 yards out.

King’s Fork took a 35-7 lead into halftime.

Up 28, the Bulldogs opened the second half with an onside kick and recovery, squashing any hope for a Bruins comeback with Artis-Boone waltzing into the endzone from 1 yard out.

Artis-Boone connected with Bumpers for the game’s final touchdown with 6:37 left in the final quarter.

Head coach Anthony Joffrion said he was proud of how his team responded to adversity, especially after Artis-Boone threw an ill-advised pass that Bethel intercepted. Joffirion’s defense played tough and did not allow any points off the turnover.

“I think our kids did a great job tonight, Joffrion said. “Overcoming adversity, taking coaching, especially some of our halftime adjustments. They did a really good job.”

King’s Fork will play host to the winner of the Warwick.Menchville game next Friday at 7 p.m.
