Summer days are not too far away …

The leaves have finally made their return to the trees, lush with vibrant greens and touches of pink from the flowers. Suffolk is in full bloom, especially the rose trees. Outside temperatures are starting to feel like a warm embrace. You can almost see summer approaching, much like you would see a friend approaching when waiting to pick them up inside the airport. You see a glimpse of them down the long corridor. You know they’re coming but haven’t quite made it to you yet. They’re just a few short strides away.

In this edition of Suffolk Living, you will find many interesting stories that remind me of the nearing days of summer, like going abroad, being outside in nature among the flowers and of course, the weather.

In our first feature story of this edition, Ryan Wingeman hopes she will inspire you to follow your dreams, as she did after a trip abroad to Oderzo, Italy, with the Suffolk sister-cities program. Her journey from Suffolk to Italy kicked off an adventure of a lifetime and the opportunity to follow her passions in the fashion industry.

Read on over to In the News and learn about the Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week Tour and the stop they made right here in the Riverview neighborhood of Suffolk. Over six Suffolk homes were open during the spring tour, and people could enjoy the flora, fauna, and beautiful botanicals.

Summer not only brings a change in the temperatures as we pack up our sweaters and break out our shorts but also changes in our weather patterns. Our neighbors, just a short drive down Route 460 at the Wakefield National Weather Service Center, provide us with an inside look at their operation. In addition to providing critical severe weather updates, the team in Wakefield took Suffolk Living reporter James Robinson behind the scenes to learn more about the science of predicting and forecasting the weather.

Whether it’s the weather, like the first roll of thunder in the late afternoon storm, sitting in the garden enjoying the flowers with bees and other pollinators buzzing about or planning a trip overseas. The enjoyment of summer in Suffolk is nearing, and you can sense it just a short stride away. Get out there and enjoy.
