The Virginia High School League (VHSL) on Thursday announced the cancellation of all state championship events for gymnastics, swimming and diving, and wrestling that were scheduled for this weekend due to severe weather conditions affecting the Commonwealth.
VHSL says it will now hold the state championships for these three sports next week, with dates, locations, and schedules to be announced as soon as possible.
Executive Director John W. “Billy” Haun said in a press release that the decision came after discussions with several school divisions in impacted areas and the Governor’s declaration of a State of Emergency for Virginia.
“Safety must always be a priority for any school event,” Haun said. “We cannot guarantee that asking school divisions to have students travel on Saturday would be safe.”
Haun mentioned that the VHSL staff is working diligently to reschedule the events and finalize plans as quickly as possible.
The state wrestling championships will now be held over one day at six high school sites instead of the two-day event typically held at larger venues in previous years.
Securing venues for the state swimming and diving championships presents unique challenges. Some original locations may be unavailable next weekend, and the schedule for the event could also depend on the availability of judges.
Lake Braddock Secondary School is confirmed to host the state gymnastics championships on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1.
