The Virginia State Police (VSP) is urging motorists to remain off the roads as the effects of the winter storm continue to impact the Hampton Roads area.
As of midnight Wednesday, Feb. 19, troopers had responded to 861 incidents, including 223 crashes, with 11 injuries reported. According to VSP, the majority of incidents involved motorists who lost control of their vehicles and drove too fast for the weather conditions.
VSP is urging motorists to slow down, use headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Drivers are also reminded to wear seatbelts and be aware of all emergency vehicles, including police, fire and rescue, VDOT, and tow trucks. Motorists should slow down or move over when emergency personnel are assisting others.
VSP also reminds motorists to keep safe from snow plows and allows VDOT to clear roadways safely. Pedestrians are not allowed on interstate highways, including on and off ramps. Sledding is prohibited and dangerous due to vehicle traffic.
VSP will continue releasing information on major incidents and provide a final update on total numbers Friday morning.
