Nansemond-Suffolk Academy went on lockdown Monday morning after a report was made that a student had a firearm on campus. According to a letter sent to parents from Head of School Mike Barclay, NSA followed their emergency protocols, the student was quickly isolated and the Suffolk Police Department was called.

SPD responded to the 3300 block of Pruden Boulevard where they found the firearm in a bag in a student’s locker. No one was harmed and the student is in custody and will not be returning to NSA.

The letter stated there is no ongoing threat at this time and the school will continue to operate as normal.

“We understand that an incident like this can be deeply upsetting for students and families,” reads the letter, and Barclay encourages students to seek assistance from NSA counselors if they need to.

“We are incredibly grateful to our students, faculty and staff for their calm response in following our emergency procedures,” the letter continues. “We want to extend our sincere gratitude to the Suffolk Police Department for their immediate response and support.”

This is an ongoing investigation and Barclay urged people to refrain from sharing unverifiable information.

“As always, the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority,” he wrote. “Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s division head or me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued trust in NSA.”
