Carpenter’s two homers power Saints past Manteo

After suffering a 4-3 9-inning loss to Grassfield on Tuesday, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints bounced back with a decisive win over Manteo on Wednesday.
Zoey Carpenter crushed two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints past Manteo, 7-1. Carpenter homered in the first and third innings, setting the tone for the Saints.
Marin McGowan was dominant in the circle, striking out 10 while allowing no hits and one unearned run over five innings. The Saints’ starter walked one.
Carpenter’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first put Nansemond-Suffolk on the board, and in the third, she launched another home run to center field, scoring two more. Sophia Grant followed with an RBI single to extend the lead.
Manteo’s Calleigh Bush allowed six runs on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking two. Despite the loss, Manteo’s defense turned a double play and committed no errors, with Kayla Austin recording 10 putouts.
Elise Barbour closed the game for Nansemond-Suffolk, throwing two hitless innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Saints tallied 12 hits, with Grant and Malli Groves each collecting multiple hits. Bailey Dickerson drove in Manteo’s only run.
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy will face Fredericksburg Christian Eagles on Saturday.
