Suffolk City Council has unanimously approved a conditional use permit for an indoor baseball and softball training facility on Shoulders Hill Road. The new 12,000-square-foot facility, to be named DBAT Suffolk, will provide year-round training opportunities for players of all levels.

During the council meeting, Kevin Wyne, Director of Planning and Community Development, presented the proposal, noting that the property is zoned M1 (industrial) and falls within the city’s employment center designation. The facility will feature 11 batting cages, pitching areas, and a pro shop. DBAT Suffolk’s operating hours will be Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. The business expects to employ five full-time and five part-time staff and 10 contracted licensed instructors.

City staff reviewed the proposal and found it to be in compliance with Suffolk’s comprehensive plan and Unified Development Ordinance. The Planning Commission had previously recommended approval with a 7-0 vote.

During the public hearing, Matt Finch, owner of DBAT Suffolk, expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the nationally recognized baseball and softball training brand to the area. “DBAT, which stands for Developing Beliefs, Attitudes, and Traditions, is a premier baseball and softball training center,” Finch said. “With over 180 locations nationwide, including facilities in Virginia Beach and Newport News, I’m excited to bring this opportunity to Suffolk’s athletes.”

During the public hearing, no opposition to the project was voiced, and the motion passed unanimously with an 8-0 vote.
