Around 10 a.m. this morning, Nansemond River High School administration was made aware of a social media post containing an alleged threat to the school, according to a letter sent to parents from NRHS Principal Dr. Shawn Green.

Once made aware of the post, NRHS immediately contacted the Suffolk Police Department and the School Resource Officer from John Yeates Middle School assisted with the investigation.

The letter states the school is working with law enforcement to determine the origin of the post, and the student who reposted it has been identified and will be disciplined in accordance with NRHS’s Code of Conduct.

A statement from SPD said the post was investigated and there were no credible threats made to any students, faculty, or staff.

The student was also searched and no weapon was found.

The school implemented increased security measures, including increased law enforcement presence on campus, heightened surveillance, and increased staff vigilance. The letter stated they will also continue to do safety checks.

The letter reminded parents to discuss the importance of reporting any possible situations that could threaten school safety to an administrator, teacher, or staff member.

“We extend our gratitude to our students and our school community for bringing this post to our attention and allowing us to respond promptly,” reads the letter. “We take any threat to the safety of our school community very seriously. We will continue to work collaboratively with our local law enforcement and maintain open lines of communication with our parents, students, and staff.”
