SUFFOLK, Va. — According to a press release from Suffolk Fire and Rescue, a fire in a custodial closet at Creekside Elementary School on Thursday evening was quickly brought under control.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Bennetts Creek Park Road just after 6 p.m. following reports of a fire alarm. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke inside the building and upgraded the call to a full commercial structure fire.

Pushing into the school, firefighters located flames in a custodial closet near the restrooms. A sprinkler system had already activated, containing much of the fire before crews fully extinguished it. The situation was brought under control within an hour.

The release said damage was primarily confined to the custodial closet and a nearby mezzanine, though smoke and water affected other parts of the building. Suffolk Public Schools has already begun cleanup efforts with a restoration company.

No injuries were reported, and the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the cause.

Suffolk Public Schools are not currently in session due to spring break. However, the release states school officials are still working to determine whether upcoming classes will be impacted. Classes are scheduled to resume on Monday, April 21.
