For the first time, Suffolk Parks and Recreation is providing kayak rentals in partnership with Suffolk Tourism. Rentals are available 24/7 and are located at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina, and Sleepy Hole Park.
In order to request a kayak, citizens can download the Rent.Fun app on their phones, create a profile, and pay with a credit or debit card directly through the app. Once paid for, the kayak locker will unlock, and renters can get a kayak, paddle, and life vest.
Rental rates start at $25 for a two-hour period, with additional hours available for $15 per hour.
Director of Parks and Recreation Mark Furlo said the city is “really excited” to be able to offer this new activity to citizens.
Kayaks have been available since the end of February and are already being used.
Furlo said so far, there have been 12 rentals from Constant’s Wharf and one from Sleepy Hole Park.
“It’s still a little cold, it’s not really prime kayaking weather,” he said, “so we anticipate that’s going to pick up as the weather improves.”
Renters must be at least 18 years old, and only one person is allowed per kayak.
Furlo said it’s also important not to rent a kayak if there is inclement weather, such as lightning, wind, or rain. Be mindful of other boats, always have a means of communication, and wear a life jacket at all times.
