What NBA Player Could Kick It into Gear Swiftest?
Who is the fastest NBA player?
When it comes to making the NBA, there are many factors: size, strength, a shooting touch, and an overall gift for basketball. One of the key pieces for some is speed. “March Madness favorites” often showcase young talent with incredible quickness. Who is the fastest player in the NBA is an age-old question every season. The faster some are, the better chance they have to shake opponents or get that quick first step toward the hoop.
Sportskeeda took a look at what it considers are the top five players in the 2024-25. One might surprise you since he is the oldest player in the league. Yes, LeBron James checks in at fifth. He turned 40 in December but you would never know it by his legs.
When James races down the court or drives to the hoop, he looks like a 21-year-old. It is a combination of power and acceleration that has been rarely seen in any sport. That’s what happens when you take care of your body and are one of the greatest NBA players.
Fourth on their list is another physical specimen unlike many. Russell Westbrook is a powerhouse – like James – and can run up and down the court, leaving foes gasping for air. The Denver Nuggets guard may not have the most deft shooting touch but when it comes to getting to the hoop he is still a major threat. The 36-year-old can still ball and is on a Denver team that should menace in the postseason.
In the third slot is a younger player, not a rookie by any means but one of the fastest NBA players whose star continues to rise. Donovan Mitchell averages about 25 points per game in his career. He is the leader of a Cleveland Cavaliers team that has dominated foes in the NBA in 2024-25. This is a team that will roll into the playoffs as the top seed in the East and likely the entire league.
Rounding in second is one of the more controversial players in the NBA. When Ja Morant is on the court for the Memphis Grizzlies, he is a force. However, injuries and suspensions have derailed his growth. It is a shame because Memphis needs him at 100% all the time. Morant’s speed and athleticism creates highlights night in and night out. Put on SportsCenter or any other show that features amazing NBA plays and you are likely to see a spectacular effort by Morant on any night the Grizzlies play.
The speediest player, per Sportskeeda, had to make some fast moves this season, but not on the court. After seven-plus seasons in Sacramento, De”Aaron Fox had to pack his things and now calls San Antonio home. He’s averaging better than 19 points and almost seven rebounds per game for a team that suffered the loss of the incomparable Victor Wembanyama. In the future, when Wemby is healthy, he will team with Fox, who has that incredible first-step burst, to provide a dynamic combination.
How many miles do NBA players run in a game?
NBA.com keeps track of how many miles NBA players run in a game. Guards probably travel the most given how much they handle the ball and are moving around the offense. In fact, this season Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers leads at almost three miles per contest. Mikal Bridges of the New York Knicks is second at 2.87 miles per contest. To give you an idea of how the Knicks’ offense ticks through movement, Josh Hart clicks at 2.76 miles per game with Jalen Brunson at 2.65 mpg.
Who is the slowest NBA player?
The slowest NBA players have something in common: They are twin brothers. Brook and Robin Lopez has the same genes. It could be because at better and seven-feet tall and carrying more than 280 pounds apiece, the Lopez twins lumber up and down the court rather than buzz by foes.
Despite their lack of speed, the twins have had accomplished and long careers in the NBA so speed isn’t everything.
According to NBA 2K24 most, if not all, of the slower players fit into the center and power forward category. It just goes to prove that you can have massive size, strength and power but feed usually isn’t a talent box checked with the previous three categories.
