Nansemond-Suffolk Academy took the first step in its quest for a sixth straight state championship on Friday, rolling past Peninsula Catholic 11-0 to capture the TCIS tournament title.
The Saints wasted no time setting the tone, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back. Paige Meeks led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including a pair of two-run singles in the first and second innings.
The early outburst began with Addy Smith scoring on a sacrifice fly by Zoey Carpenter. Marin McGowan followed with an RBI single before Meeks, Carleigh McCoy, and Mackenzie Farrell drove in runs to cap the six-run frame.
NSA stayed aggressive in the second. Meeks delivered again with her second two-run single of the day, and Elise Barbour doubled in another run to stretch the lead to 9-0. Carpenter and Sophia Grant added sacrifice flies in the third to round out the scoring.
Meanwhile, McGowan, the University of North Carolina Greensboro commit, dominated the circle, striking out 13, allowing just one hit, and didn’t walk a batter in a complete-game effort.
NSA collected 13 hits in the win. Meeks, Smith, McGowan, and Malli Groves each had two hits. Makenna Kuehl added two stolen bases, and the defense backed McGowan with a clean game in the field.
Peninsula Catholic’s only hit came from Autumn Baker, who went 1-for-2. Starting pitcher Quinn Freakley gave up 11 runs—six earned—on 13 hits over four innings.
With the TCIS title in hand, the Saints now shift their attention to the VISAA Division II state playoffs, where they look to bring home their sixth consecutive state crown.
